summer reading book review

Over my summer vacation I read the whole Harry Potter series over the course of a month.

Although I had already read the series when I was younger, it felt really great to return to it with a

better understanding of the text and really gave me a newfound love and appreciation of well written

literature. being that I was in Africa at the time when I re-read this series there was not much

entertainment. Which made reading more rich and interesting than ever before.

This was because I was in an environment where there were no electronics to fill my free time with

which in the end lead me to reading. On another note I noticed three important themes in the book

that i'd like to explore. The first one is how Harry, Ron and Hermione's friendship works and the

constant patterns that it has. Secondly, another important theme is the resemblance that Voldemort

and the death eaters have to real life people, organizations and events. And finally the last theme that

I would like to write about is the symbol that Dumbledore is to me, what he, himself, his character

and his persona stand for, either in the book of Harry Potter and in the real world.

The first main idea of the whole Harry potter series is how Harry, Ron and Hermione's

friendship works and the constant patterns it consists of. What I observe from Harry, Ron and

Hermione's friendship is that when there is a verbal fight within the trio of friends Ron is pretty much

always involved as one of the two people upset with each other. This observation can be made from

several of the fights this three way friend ship has had for instance a few examples of this is in book

three where hermione and him are angry with each other and are as well in a huge conflict with each

other that stretches out through out most of the book. Another example is in book four where he's

angry at Harry for being helplessly the constant center of attention. And for the last example in book

7 when he walks out on Harry and Hermione out of self inner jealousy of Harry and Hermione's close

but sometimes unclear non romantic relationship which is greatly intensified by the horcrux's anger

and pure evil. The way that Harry Ron and Hermione's relationship works is that Ron and Hermione

have constant romantic and self related tension. whereas Harry stands completely aware or non-

aware of this building emotional tension between Ron and Hermione where he stands in the middle

as a pillar to lean on for moral support and comfort.

The 2nd main theme that really got my brain thinking comparing and inferring is what resemblance

Voldemort and his followers have to real life people, events and organizations. from looking at this

purely evil character with levels that a reader would have look at more carefully to notice and see like

hate for muggles because of his upbringing and noticing and discovering a new world that is richer

kinder and more welcoming causing him to think lesser of muggles now that they are like a race to

him and he does not consider himself one of them. Another level to Voldemort is his clear
misguidance and wrong use and outlook on the wizard world and not realizing that it is a privilege

not a right to be part of that world therefore to not abuse the way that magic can be used. Getting to

the point my opinion is that Voldemort and his army are similar in ways to the Nazi party although it

might sound foolish comparing a children's book villain to one of the most cynical disturbed and evil

men the world has ever known to live I think there are many similarities between these two men and

there armies and beliefs. One of these is the way that Voldemort finds that muggles are impure like

how Hitler found jews impure, another similarity is that they both have this ethnic back round in

themselves and they want to conquer the world with one type of people living on it there "own" they

are also both ruthless and will stop at nothing to achieve there objective whatever it may be.

The last main theme is that Dumbledore represents a universal symbol of wisdom kindness and

guidance and all together he represents the good in the world the warmth that gives people hope and

inspires them to seek there true and complete happiness. It shows that Dumbledore fits all of these

descriptions because of his true and non filtered love for Harry and how almost everything he does

for him is for Harry's best interest and sometimes makes the hard choices and receives the cold

shoulder because of this battle taking place inside of him where his love for Harry and better

judgement are battling inside of him because he wants Harry to be happy but he also wants Harry to

be prepared for whats ahead of him and he battles with himself the whole time about guiding Harry

through his life at Hogwarts even though it is not always wanted or noticed.

In conclusion these three main ideas are complex and have many opinions and details to them

although the whole topic of each topic was not provided because of the massive ideas quotes and

opinions around it they were summarized into the most important and interesting parts. I can relate to

parts of Harry's basic character like his loyalty to his beliefs and friends loyalty is a part of my self

character that is very strong. All in all Harry Potter is a massive master piece of creativity emotion

symbolism and wonder.

  1. I liked your response because it was detailed and stayed on topic throughout the response. You also divided the topics well so that they made sense. You could work on having your sentences flow better and making sure you put your thoughts in.
