"Giver" Reading Response

"The Giver" by "Lois Lowry" is a book that deals with Democracy, Individualism and life's secrets. "The Giver" is a Book that has been questioned and even banned in certain libraries and schools. Lately whether or not certain books should be banned has been a much talked about controversial topic. The reason why I think the book is so controversial itself because it deals with the faults in our society and whether it is worth getting rid of all the goodness in our world so we can get rid of the bad too.

I think that "The Giver" should NOT be banned . "The Giver" should not be banned because the violent and sexual content in the book can teach people lessons, like enjoy the ability to love and feel and emotion and control violence and stop war.  A part from the text that I think shows people should enjoy the feeling of love is "No,no," She said. "just the pills. You're ready for the pills, that's all. That's the treatment for Stirrings." Basically the context and meaning of this line is that Jonas is beginning to feel love and sexual attraction to towards this girl named Fiona, and in the community that Jonas lives in They're really dull and live with out passion and color so when kids start hitting puberty and get hormonal reactions they take pills to take away any feelings of love. Another part of the book that would teach readers how horrible and destructive and in-purposeful  war is, is "Dirt streaked the boy's face and his matted blond hair. He lay sprawled, his gray uniform glistening with wet, fresh blood. The colors of carnage were grotesquely bright: the crimson wetness on the rough and dusty fabric , the ripped shreds of grass, startlingly green, inn the boy's , in the boy's yellow hair. The boy stared at him. "Water" he begged again. When he spoke, a new spurt of blood drenched the coarse cloth across his chest and sleeve." I find this sentence alone in the chapter containing the memory of war convincing of how horrible war is, because it is so descriptive that you imagine such a dark, violent scene playing out before your eyes that it makes one realize how horrible war really is.

In Conclusion I also strongly believe that no book should be banned. I think this because banning a piece of literature that contains controversial content, is taking away someone's freedom of knowledge that in a country that stands for freedom should not be taken away.
